RSS FEEDS
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an application that uses the internet meta-language XML. RSS files are usually used to syndicate web text, that is to say: make it available to a large number of consumers. As a rule, web pages are displayed on the Internet in a pleasing way and are surrounded by navigation options and advertisements. RSS delivers a rough version of the page with just the headlines and a link to the actual page. It turns data from a website into a format that other sites or programs can automatically display in their own environments. The information offered in RSS format is called 'an RSS feed' or 'RSS channel'.
THE ADVANTAGES
Reading web text with an RSS reader saves the user time in both surfing and searching the Internet. The programmes are intended to allow Internet users fast, direct information about the current state of affairs in their particular area of interest on the Internet. However, not every site has an RSS feed. RSS is chiefly used on websites that are frequently updated, such as news sites, community sites and weblogs.
INDICATION
RSS feeds can generally be recognised by the presence of a square, orange button that contains three white curves. Other possibilities are purely textual references to terms like RSS, RDF and XML, no matter whether or not they are combined with the term 'syndication'. This text or image is linked to an RSS feed with a hyperlink. Simply copy the RSS feed’s location on the Internet by clicking on it with your right mouse button and choosing the 'Copy' command. Then 'Paste' the link in the RSS reader.
